Kumar Gandharva: First Encounters

The following is an excerpt from Pt. Satyasheel Deshpande's Marathi book, Gaan Gunagaan, Rajhans Prakashan, 2023, edited and translated by Srijan Deshpande. Of Acoustics and Aesthetics

I have a chapter in a new monograph that brings together perspectives on using computational tools to understand and analyse music. Titled 'Of Acoustics and Aesthetics: Analysing Vocal Timbre in the Hindustani Khayal', my paper uses spectrographic analysis and new insights from the fields of voice science and psychoacoustics to develop a nuanced perspective on the vocal timbres of some iconic Hindustani vocalists.

Two Idiolects of Rāga Śrī (Aug 2019)

Srijan Deshpande, Hindustani classical vocalist and researcher presents a paper exploring personal conceptions of rāga Śrī as well as of the very concept of Rāga. This paper was presented as part of a seminar entitled ‘Creativity and the Khayal’ that was held on 19th August 2019 on the occasion of the launch of the Manipal-Samvaad Centre for Indian Music.
