An abridged version of this piece was carried in The Hindu's Friday Review edition, dated April 07, 2023, to mark the beginning of Kumar Gandharva's birth centenary year.
I have a chapter in a new monograph that brings together perspectives on using computational tools to understand and analyse music. Titled 'Of Acoustics and Aesthetics: Analysing Vocal Timbre in the Hindustani Khayal', my paper uses spectrographic analysis and new insights from the fields of voice science and psychoacoustics to develop a nuanced perspective on the vocal timbres of some iconic Hindustani vocalists.
The wonderful Kedar Nimkar interviews me for his Audiogyan Podcast. We discuss music research, shāstra, tradition, the colonial encounter and Kumar Gandharva. Link above.

Srijan Deshpande, Hindustani classical vocalist and researcher presents a paper exploring personal conceptions of rāga Śrī as well as of the very concept of Rāga. This paper was presented as part of a seminar entitled ‘Creativity and the Khayal’ that was held on 19th August 2019 on the occasion of the launch of the Manipal-Samvaad Centre for Indian Music.

This article was written for a Saptak Archives production, published as a tribute to Vidushi Kishori Amonkar after her passing in 2017. The publication included clips from archival recordings from Kishoritai’s concerts in Ahmedabad, as well as a brief biographical sketch, both of which are presented below.
